ARTIST STATEMENT
I work with paper, charcoal, ink, and translucent coatings to create drawings, fragile objects, and spatial installations. Through folding, layering, cutting, and shaping, paper becomes a body-like material: a skin, a trace, a structure under tension.
My practice explores transformation, vulnerability, and inner pressure. Forms and processes found in nature — such as skins, shells, growth, decay, and cellular structures — often serve as quiet points of departure, but are reduced into ambiguous states between organism, object, and memory.
Lines, cracks, layers, and accumulations make visible what is usually quiet or hidden: emotional weight, fragile endurance, and the shifting relationship between body, matter, and mind. My works invite a slower form of looking, where vulnerability is not understood as weakness, but as a state of presence.
ABOUT
Born in Salzburg, Austria, Marion C. Hoepflinger lives and works in the countryside near her hometown. Trained as a molecular biologist, she holds a doctorate and spent many years in basic research, studying cellular structures in muscles, higher plants, and algae. This scientific background continues to inform her artistic practice through a sensitivity to morphology, transformation, material processes, and the hidden structures of living systems.
Since 2013, Hoepflinger has pursued her artistic path, shaped by her mentors Mag.a Alfia Weingartner and Christine Kastner, a graphic design program completed in 2019, and her work in cultural education at Museum Fronfeste and KUBIQ – Kultur- und Bildungsquartier Thalgau. Since 2025, she has been a member of art bv Berchtoldvilla – Vereinigung Bildende Kunst Salzburg.
Working mainly with paper, charcoal, ink, and translucent coatings, she creates drawings, fragile objects, and spatial installations that explore transformation, vulnerability, inner pressure, and the ambiguous space between organism, body, and memory. Her works have been shown in solo and group exhibitions in Austria and abroad. In 2025, she received a recognition award from the State of Salzburg; in 2026, she was awarded the art bv Berchtoldvilla Award for her installation CARRYING IT ALL.
Marion's works are in private as well as public collections, e. g. the collection of the City of Salzburg (Sammlung der Stadt Salzburg).
