DE PROFUNDIS – OUT OF THE DEPTHS
In Dialogue with the Subconscious
Minimalist black-and-white works inspired by Rorschach tests invite viewers to explore shifting associations and inner landscapes. Fragments of poetry by Celan, Bachmann, and AI-generated texts are interwoven, blurring the boundaries between human and machine imagination.
The works were presented at Literaturhaus Henndorf, Salzburg, Austria, from 14. September to 4. December 2025.

‘The subconscious is a field that I always associated
with strange secrets that need to be explored.’
Marion C. Hoepflinger
Inspired by the inkblot tests of psychiatrist Hermann Rorschach — in which abstract shapes are interpreted as windows into the human psyche — she began in 2024 to examine paintings that emerge from her own subconscious. In this ongoing series, Marion turns inward, using black paint on paper to explore the landscapes hidden within her inner mind. She works in a spontaneous, intuitive way, allowing forms to emerge without planning or control. From this process arise shapes that suggest landscapes, figures, or forms that invite personal associations.
For the exhibition at the Literaturhaus Henndorf, these works are interwoven with fragments of poetry by Paul Celan, Ingeborg Bachmann, and others — verses that surfaced in Marion’s mind as she contemplated her finished paintings.
To deepen the sense of the hidden and unconscious, the artist also invited the artificial intelligence ChatGPT to interpret her images and create poetic responses. These AI-generated texts appear alongside the literary quotations, blending human and machine voices into a shared dialogue.
The series is presented across several spaces within the historic Literaturhaus Henndorf, with each station highlighting a distinct aspect of the work.
